How to Get Fit When You Don’t Know Where to Start – Try Side Steps!
Getting fit can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re not sure where to begin and you feel too old and creaky to try anything too risky. But it doesn’t have to be complicated! One of the simplest exercises you can do anytime, anywhere is side steps – and they’re great for strengthening your hips.
Why Are Strong Hips Important?
Your hips play a huge role in how you move. They support your balance, help you walk and run smoothly, and reduce strain on your knees and lower back. Weak hip muscles can lead to aches, pains, and even injuries over time.
By strengthening your hips, you improve your stability and make everyday activities – like walking, climbing stairs, and standing for long periods – much easier. Plus, strong hips help prevent injuries, keeping you active for longer!
How to Do Side Steps
You don’t need any equipment, and you can do them anywhere – at home, in the office, or even while waiting for the kettle to boil!
Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart.
Step to the side with your right foot, keeping your knees slightly bent.
Bring your left foot in to meet your right foot.
Repeat the movement, stepping side to side for 30–60 seconds.
To make it harder, add a resistance band around your thighs or lower legs.
Why Side Steps Work
This simple movement activates your hip muscles, improving strength, stability, and coordination. It’s also a great way to get moving if you’ve been sitting for too long!
I had a client who would do this whenever she was in the kitchen. As a result she felt much stronger and stable in her body. It’s amazing what little and often can do for you.
